Cabbage trees!

Call me slow, but I didn't realise just how amazing Ti kouka and their rellies were until recently!

Today on This Way Up at 1.30, I'm chatting with Simon Morton about them, and I've just put up some info about them on Wild Picnic.

Next time I have a garden, the first thing I'm going to start planting is cabbage trees!

I love my cabbage tree - not that I know how to use it nutritionally or medicinally yet. Aesthetically, they've been a fav for many years too.

Great info at wild picnic. We have some stunning cabbage trees at Playcentre which I planted long ago, before I had a garden of my own. They're huge now and quite special to me.

Nikki, will be interested to hear if you do anything medicinal with it.

Gillybean - wow, what a lovely gift you gave the Playcentre - and wonderful that you can still enjoy them yourself!!

Hey! We were on our way home from the park today and you came on the radio with Simon! I went for an extra long ticky tour with the chidlers to listen to it all. Cabbage trees eh ... well we have at least 10 well established trees and I have just planted 2 in the last year that are doing so well. Yes, they certainly grow well in these conditions! So cabbage tree it will be on the menu over the weekend - will try it for sure :) the roasted stuff sounded good. Will let you know how it goes.

Until recently Cabbage trees have annoyed the heck out of me. I love the look of a mature cabbage tree but the fallen leaves get in my lawn mower and all over my garden and annoy me!
I've since learnt that the leaves are great kindling! I can like them again now that they have a use. And I'll go listen to your radio spot so I can find even more uses for them!

ok, I went out to harvest but couldn't work out what part to take from the top without taking the whole head and thereby beheading the cabbage tree! And getting some root just seems far to tricky. Do you have another online resource you can point me in the direction of to see how it's done? Maybe we have the wring species? But I don't think so...
Or, would it be possible for you to video yourself harvesting some edible tops one day and sticking it here?
So interested in this! :)

Hi Ruth - have you got any that have several heads on them? That's the kind I've harvested from, and then you only take one or two from each tree.

I wouldn't want to take the whole head off one that only had a single head either, although I believe you can coppice them, so presumably it would grow back, but I don't know enough to be sure, and it seems a bit drastic anyway - unless you havd loads and loads and loads of them ....
